There are two main concepts of office design: open and closed. The first concept is traditional for Ukraine, it is also called the cabinet-corridor. Almost all state institutions in Ukraine have such registration. Its most characteristic features are:
- long corridors;
- separate offices;
- dividing into departments.
This office design is suitable for a company with a clear hierarchical structure, the latter involves the presence of many subordinates and the traditional system of employee coordination. Nowadays, the open office concept is more popular, it has two main varieties: European and American.
DESIGNING OFFICE SPACE IN THE USA
The approach to decorating an office in the US creates a sense of dynamism that can sometimes be perceived as a certain aggressiveness. As a rule, with this approach, a certain style is clearly expressed in the design of the room.
DESIGN OF OFFICE SPACE IN EUROPE
The approach to decoration in Europe is also based on the presence of a common large hall, however, unlike the American approach, it allows for a mixture of styles. Thanks to this, completely dissimilar elements can easily coexist in a “European” office, for example, a Persian carpet and high-tech details. Depending on the furniture that was used to decorate the office, there are several varieties of the European approach: Italian, French, Swedish, German and others. Now we will talk about the most popular styles. All the styles that we will consider are popular not only in their homeland, but also have many fans around the world. This style is known to most of us from Hollywood films. He practically leaves no one indifferent, people either admire him or cannot hide their disgust when they have to deal with this style. The Manhattan style originated in the middle and second half of the 30s of the XX century. Also, this style is sometimes called “Wall Street”. Of course, the emerging style was greatly influenced by the American conscientious approach to work and the desire for success in life. The style suggests the presence of a large hall, which is limited only by columns and outer walls. There are few separate rooms in such an office, as a rule, they are allocated for recreation areas and offices of senior managers. There is also a separate meeting room. The workplaces of most of the office staff are located in one of the large common rooms. The halls are separated from each other by light partitions. Manhattan style allows you to make the most of the limited office space. Interestingly, this style is popular not only in office design, but also in everyday life. Many Americans prefer large studio apartments. Such housing impresses with its “endless expanses” and an abundance of light. A distinctive feature of such housing are large windows and a minimum of furniture. The style is characterized by rigor and asceticism.
The main difference between the European style and the American one is the greater variety of the first. Usually in Europe, a large hall is divided into several parts with the help of light translucent panels. Thanks to these partitions, the employee can feel isolated from their neighbors, while the office remains spacious and bright. As mentioned above, the European approach is divided into national varieties. The difference between them is mainly determined by the type of furniture used. For example, Scandinavians are very fond of using wooden, less often metal and plastic furniture in light shades. Such furniture gives the impression of lightness compared to American, but by European standards it looks a bit heavy. In Britain, Italy and France preference is given to laminate furniture. It has many advantages, first of all, it allows you to emphasize corporate colors, because the laminate can be given any desired color. Very common furniture on metal legs, the latter create a feeling of lightness and sophistication. It is believed that the common European style was primarily created by Italian designers. It is they who create the most refined, airy and diverse design.
The German approach involves the orderliness of details, as well as the convenience and versatility of furniture. The location of each item in the office is carefully thought out. German interiors are distinguished by high practicality and rationality of the working space. However, office interiors do not seem boring, because their strict style is softened by a huge number of different bright colors. Fresh flowers also play an important role in the design of the office.
The French style is distinguished by its brightness, abundance of decor, bright upholstery, but at the same time lightness. Quite often in the French office you can find pictures in luxurious frames. French style has a very special charm, but can bring some eccentricity to the interior.
The main features of the British style are stiffness and sophistication. The English office is planned around a single open space that houses most of the workspaces. However, executive offices and meeting rooms are separated from the common room. British offices, as a rule, are very comfortable, peace reigns in them. Often in such an office you can find furniture made of expensive woods, luxurious handmade carpets, old books, paintings and other antiques. The style of the British cabinet is characterized not only by functionality, but also by a significant amount of aristocracy.
Unlike the French, the Scandinavian style is characterized by poor decor. As a rule, natural materials with a light color are used in the design. Scandinavian offices are very light and spacious, they evoke a feeling of simplicity and naturalness.
The Italian approach assumes the presence of a large open room, around which the office is “built”. This style allows you to do almost any redevelopment, which significantly expands the number of available design options. Along with a spacious hall for ordinary employees, the office has meeting rooms and offices for managers. The design of the Italian office is done in warm colors. The constant companions of Italian interiors are grace and elegance.
OFFICES FOR BANKS
The area of the bank is divided into two parts. The first of them is represented by a common room, where most of the customer service operations take place. In the second part are the management offices. This part of the office is usually very different in style from the common room. If in the common hall they adhere to the concept of open space, which is designed to rally the workers, to maintain the spirit of a single team in them, then the management offices, on the contrary, are deliberately designed aristocratically. The fact is that such a somewhat pompous style involuntarily evokes a sense of trust in the bank among customers. We have already familiarized ourselves with a similar design style above using the example of an English office.
OFFICE IN A LAW COMPANY
The design of the office of a law firm should evoke in visitors associations with quality, stability and reliability, this will greatly facilitate the work of bankers in attracting funds from clients. This effect can be achieved with the help of a rational layout, a strict style and a certain structure of the office, which will display the hierarchy of its employees. For the offices of law firms, the office system is more preferable, because it is more convenient for negotiations. It is also worth noting that a law firm should not skimp on luxurious furniture.
OFFICE IN AN ENGINEERING COMPANY
For offices of engineering and technology companies, an open space layout is more convenient. It allows the most efficient use of every square meter and at the same time promotes communication and interaction of employees. At the same time, workers need to provide a certain degree of privacy in the workplace, which can best be achieved with low or translucent partitions. As a rule, in engineering companies, first of all, it is worth striving for greater comfort for employees, and not for greater aesthetics of the premises. After all, design bureaus rarely have visitors. At the same time, one should not deprive the manager’s office of representative functions, it should make a proper impression on visitors. It is worth considering that the style of such an office should not blindly copy samples from companies that operate in other areas. On the contrary, it is worth abandoning the traditional aristocratic style. High-tech office design would be more appropriate.
OFFICE OF A COMPANY THAT MANUFACTURES CONSUMER GOODS
Such companies should focus on their product in every possible way, this can be done with the help of office design. Therefore, office space often acquires such features as originality and hyperbolicity. Typically, such offices are widely used laminate, metal and glass. The standard is the bright colors of the walls and other elements of the office space. It is worth remembering that with any design, the office should not lose stylistic integrity.
OFFICE OF THE ADVERTISING COMPANY
Advertising companies prefer to focus on open space in office design. Often they choose the American approach to design. This is largely due to the peculiarities of the relationship between employees and management, because advertising companies are democratic, their management is always open to new ideas. In advertising companies, when choosing furniture, preference is given to ergonomic and multifunctional samples.
The design of a typical Japanese office is based on three principles: simplicity, consistency, harmony. The furniture in Japanese offices is quite uniform, almost always the same materials are used, the furniture of different employees practically does not differ. For decoration, natural fabrics are used, a pronounced craving for the use of materials of natural origin and light soft colors is noticeable in everything. When repair and furnishing an office, this should be taken into account. The structure of the office reflects the hierarchy of relations between employees and company management. Ordinary workers sit together in an “open space” with virtually no partitions between jobs. The company’s management has separate offices, which, as a rule, are located directly opposite the common room, as a result, the management can always watch subordinates. As in European offices, the design often emphasizes the scope of the company.
OFFICE IN A RUSSIAN COMPANY
In Ukraine, open space in the office has not yet become a common practice. Typically, such a layout can only be found in the editorial offices of newspapers and magazines. In most companies, the office consists of many separate rooms. Such a system poorly reflects the hierarchy among the company’s employees. Only two layers can be distinguished: managers and subordinates. The difference between the two is that managers use their offices alone, while subordinates are forced to share them with other employees. The most spacious room is usually assigned to the head office. The interior of such an office is almost always designed in a classic style. In the design, they strive to emphasize the financial success of the company, the design of the cabinet can be characterized by such words as rich, solid, expensive, even luxurious. How Massive furniture with expensive decor or upholstery is usually used. The desire to use expensive and prestigious materials, for example, expensive types of wood, is clearly expressed. In such offices, you can often find expensive accessories. Recently, offices with a European layout have begun to appear in Kyiv and St. Petersburg. They are strikingly different from traditional ones in the presence of large open spaces, saturation with air and light. Such offices use modern stylish light furniture with an abundance of metal parts, often it can be reconfigured. It is predicted that gradually the European style will become more and more popular in Ukraine. The old type of office with its many separate small offices will be replaced by new offices with one or more large rooms. Modern office assignments are designed specifically for this use of office space. Each floor is a separate office, it is not divided into many small rooms, a single space is divided into parts only by columns. As a result, the company has the opportunity to decorate the office in a style that suits it.
